Advanced Cardiac Life Support
This program teaches medical personnel to take care of cardiac emergencies that may be present in the acute care setting. Heart disease affects millions of people every year and makes up a significant number of patients seen in healthcare, so training in handling cardiac emergencies is a necessity. The program is designed for physicians, nurses, paramedics, physician's assistants, nurse practitioners and respiratory therapists. It's also a required course for paramedics in our EMS system as well as nurses in our critical care unit and emergency department. First-time students take a two-day course, while those seeking recertification enroll in a one-day course. It is an American Heart Association course and is taught by SBL instructors.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support
This program teaches medical personnel to take care of the critically ill or injured child or infant. This program is designed for advanced practice personnel such as physicians, respiratory therapists, nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and paramedics. First-time students take a two-day course, while those seeking recertification enroll in a one-day course. It is required training for our EMS providers and ER nurses at SBL. It is sponsored by the American Heart Association and taught by SBL instructors.

International Trauma Life Support
This program is designed for emergency personnel who work in the pre-hospital setting or emergency department. Course includes information regarding types of trauma, basic and advanced trauma assessment as well as specialty groups of patients such as children and the elderly. Skills include advanced airway maneuvers, trauma packaging and helmet removal and specialty splints. It is a required course in SBL EMS system. First-time students take a two-day course, while those seeking recertification enroll in a one-day course.

CPR  |  First Aid
This community course is offered to lay public providers who either need CPR training for a career or for those who want to take it for personal enrichment. The course is offered once a month on the first Tuesday of the month. A health care provider course is also offered once monthly for students who must have the training for allied health careers or other job requirements. Continuing education credit is offered to day care providers for whom it is required by Illinois Department of Public Health.

This year First Aid Class will be included with CPR Class every other month on the first Tuesday. CPR will begin at 5:30 pm and First Aid will follow at 6:45 pm.

Pre-Hospital Registered Nurse (PHRN)
The Pre-hospital Registered Nurse Program provides supplemental education to licensed RNs to practice within an EMS System as emergency medical services personnel for pre-hospital and inter-hospital emergency care and non-emergency transports per the guidelines outlined in Section 515.730 of the Illinois EMS Act.

This course is designed for the experienced RN who will be working as a pre-hospital provider. The course focuses on developing the knowledge and skills required for the RN to function effectively in a pre-hospital environment.

Course Prerequisites
  - Current State of Illinois Registered Nurse licensure in good standing
  - Current Healthcare Provider/Professional Rescuer CPR certification.
  - Current ACLS certification
  - Current ENPC/PALS/PEPP/EMSC certification (only one of these required)
  - Current BTLS/PHTLS/TNCC/TNS certification (only one of these required

American Heart Association BLS Instructor Course
The AHA BLS Instructor course is designed to prepare instructor candidates to teach American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Provider and Heartsaver First Aid/CPR/AED courses. Instructor candidates learn how to use AHA Instructor teaching materials, ensure that students meet learning objectives, offer student coaching skills, provide an objective skills performance evaluation, and follow AHA Instructor and course policies.

Emergency Communications Registered Nurse (ECRN)
ECRNs are State of Illinois licensed providers who monitor Emergency Medical Services telecommunications from EMTs and Paramedics and act as a designee of the EMS System Medical Director to provide medical direction to prehospital providers. Utilizing various types of telecommunications devices, the ECRN guides prehospital providers through various medical emergencies based on Sarah Bush Lincoln's EMS Policy, Procedures, and Protocols. The ECRN course provides emergency department nurses with the necessary knowledge and skills to operate as an ECRN. Our ECRN program consists of 40 hours of synchronous and asynchronous work and 8 hours of prehospital clinical.

Course Prerequisites
  - Current State of Illinois Registered Nurse licensure in good standing
  - Be employed for at least 6 months in an Emergency Department associated with the SBL EMS System
  - Current Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR Card
   - Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support
  - Current  Pediatric Advanced Life Support

4-Day Dysrhythmia Course
This 4-Day course is for healthcare professionals who participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest or other cardiovascular emergencies. This includes personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care and critical care units such as physicians, nurses, paramedics, and others who require this specialized knowledge for their job.

  • Arrhythmia recognition and causes, including all heart blocks and life-threatening rhythms
  • Basic arrhythmias Pharmacology
  • Basic ACLS drugs and usage

  • Integrating basic drug pharmacology into ACLS algorithms
