Sarah Bush Lincoln has been named as one of America’s Best Hospitals for Minimally Invasive Surgery and for Outpatient Experience by the Women’s Choice Award®, America’s trusted referral source for the best in healthcare. The awards signify that Sarah Bush Lincoln is in the top 4 percent of 4,728 U.S. hospitals reviewed for minimally invasive surgery and top 16 percent for outpatient experience.

SBL President & CEO Jerry Esker said, “We are continually striving to enhance the excellent care we provide to our community and our staff has adopted innovative approaches to provide the best possible outcomes. We were excited to learn that we earned this important recognition.”

Minimally invasive surgery has become the standard of care for many surgical procedures as a safer, less invasive and more effective option to open surgery. Minimally invasive surgeries minimize risks to the patient by significantly reducing the size of the incisions which has clear benefits including shorter hospital stays, if any, fewer complications, faster recovery, and reduced pain, scarring and costs.

Sarah Bush Lincoln achieved the America’s Best Hospitals for Minimally Invasive Surgery distinction by meeting the following criteria:

  • Hospitals must be listed by the American Hospital Directory (AHD.com) as providing Robotic Surgery. Sarah Bush Lincoln orthopedics uses the Mako Robotic-Arm for Total knee replacements. It has also earned a Certificate of Distinction from The Joint Commission for knee joint replacement.
  • The hospitals that achieve #1, must also have a patient recommendation rating of 72 percent or more (i.e. higher than the national average) from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) survey (HCAHPS).

“The Women’s Choice Award provides consumers with an objective, uniform and fact-based trusted resource to find the best hospitals that excel in minimally invasive surgery,” Delia Passi, Founder and CEO of the Women’s Choice Award, said. “Minimally invasive surgery is a great option as it requires less recovery time and reduces pain and complications, allowing a quicker return to what matters most in life.”

Sarah Bush Lincoln is one of 358 award recipients representing the hospitals that have met the highest standards for minimally invasive surgery across the U.S.

It also received recognition as America’s Best Hospital for Outpatient Experience. It signifies that Sarah Bush Lincoln is in the top 16 percent of 4,728 U.S. hospitals reviewed. Of 100 points possible, Sarah Bush Lincoln earned 98 points for providing care in a professional way; 92 points for communicating clearly what to expect before and after a procedure and 90 points for patients who rated SBL as a nine or 10. In all cases, SBL scored above the national average and is one of 267 award recipients representing the hospitals that have met the highest standards for outpatient experience in the U.S. by the Women’s Choice Award.

The methodology used is exclusive in that it evaluates patient satisfaction measures with a hospital visit based on the criteria in the Outpatient and Ambulatory Surgery Survey (OAS-CAHPS). The evaluation process is the only national list that focuses on the opinion of females. It is the only award recognizing excellence in outpatient satisfaction based on robust criteria that considers the patient experience and clinical excellence.

To receive the award, hospitals must first be accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC), The Healthcare Facilities Outpatient Program (HFAP) or Det Norske Veritas Healthcare (DNV). Accredited facilities are continuously improving the safety and quality of patient care and this certification signifies the facility’s commitment in meeting regulations and best practices for the medical industry. The categories in the OAS-CAHPS survey are assigned weights based on the feedback received from the Women’s Choice Award Survey.
